La Tour Eiffel est construite pour constituer la plus grande attraction de l’exposition universelle qui débute au mois de mai de la même année. La cérémonie d’inauguration a lieu le 31 mars 1889. Une archive mentionne qu’elle est ouverte au public le 15 mai. A l’époque, les intellectuels sont contre la construction d’un monument qui n’est pas en harmonie avec la ville de Paris et recueillent des signatures sur une pétition. Voir la liste de ces signataires est très instructif, car je pense que, à chaque époque, on peut rencontrer ce type de réaction. Aujourd’hui, elle symbolise la France et Paris et il faut être prêt à faire une longue queue pour la visiter. Puisque c’est une construction en métal et qu’elle s’oxyde avec le temps, elle menace de se désagréger et de tomber en ruine. Pour l’anniversaire de ses cent ans, il a été envisagé de la détruire, mais elle est toujours là et attire de plus en plus de touristes du monde entier.
The completion ceremony was held on March 31, 1889. The Paris Universal Exposition opened in May of that year with the tower as the main feature and the records say that it was open to the public from May 15. The cultural elite were opposed to such a disreputable thing which seemed to be in disharmony with the historical scenery of Paris and they organized a petition. I feel that this can happen at any period. The list of those who signed it is interesting. Now it is the main sight-seeing feature of Paris and we must be prepared for a very long queue
to buy tickets. On the 100th anniversary there was discussion about whether to demolish it because its steel frame was getting rusty and might not be able to stand much longer but more and more people visit it from all over the world and it is safe and sound.
一八八九年三月三一日に完成式が開かれた。その年の五月からオープンの、パリ万国博覧会の目玉呼び物に建てられたわけで、一般に公開されたのは五月十五日からと記録が残っている。こんなミットモない、歴史あるパリの景観に不調和な物を建ててと、当時の文化人が総反対で、署名運動。何時の時代も同じだなと、そのサインした人たちのリストが興味深い。今ではチケットを買うのに、長蛇の行列を覚悟しなければならない、パリ観光のシンボルだ。百年目に、鉄骨なので錆びて、老朽化して保たない恐れあり、取り壊すという論議もあったが、ますます人が観光に、世界中から押しかけて健在である。
